The France national team undoubtedly have one of the strongest teams in the World Cup.
With the likes of players such as Hugo Lloris, Paul Pogba, Griezmann and young talent such as, Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe, Lemar and Fekir,
you can expect this French national team to be going far in the stages of the World Cup.
France’s World Cup History
To begin, let’s go over France’s past experiences in the World Cup. The Blues held their first World Cup in 1938 where they reached the quarter-finals and lost to Italy.
Coincidentally, the next time they held the World Cup in 1998, was the year they won.
The winning squad consisted of players such as Blanc, Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Robert Pires and Desailly.
It’s not surprising that they won the World Cup that year when they had players that high quality.
How have France been doing in the World Cup?
So far in this competition, France won their first 2 games against Peru and Australia.
They also drew their third game against Denmark which ended at 0-0.
This was enough to send them through to the round of 16 where they will be facing Argentina.
For France’s game against Argentina, I personally believe that because of Argentina’s form during this World Cup, France will be the ones going through to the quarter-finals.
France’s team also has more depth and talent throughout the whole team, rather than Argentina’s attacking expertise.
Argentina’s defense is lacking compared to France’s. This is why I believe Argentina will end up getting outclassed.
So far, all the group’s until group D have finished their group stage games.
The teams that shall be advancing through are, Russia, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Croatia and Argentina.
With the exit of Germany in the World Cup, it will take a load off most of the players and fans knowing they won’t be going up against them at any point.
What formation do France like using?
France don’t like to stick to one formation. Throughout the World Cup, we’ve seen France try out a number of formations.
Some of these formations include the 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and the 4-1-2-1-2 formation.
They have worked best with the 4-3-3 as they have a lot of pacey players to run down the wings and create chances.
This formation also works well because of the 3 midfielders, this is because it allows players such as Pogba and Kante to roam around the pitch and assist the forwards.
While doing this, Matuidi stays back just in case they give away the ball and a counter-attack is played by the other team.
Even though France have a number of world class players at their disposal, they are lacking the team chemistry that a lot of other teams do have, such as Germany.
We have seen in some of their performances that they fail to make important runs and quick one two’s that can easily break the opponents defence.
A lot of the time, the French supporters blame France’s manager, Didier Deschamps for the lack of team chemistry the team has and for the players he picks to play in some matches.
Most of the French supporters do not agree with a lot of the decisions Deschamps makes, this is why if France don’t go far in this World Cup, he will most likely be sacked from the squad.
Who Could Play France If They Beat Argentina?
The brackets show that whoever wins the match between France and Argentina will play against the winners of the match between Portugal and Uruguay.
I personally predict that Portugal will come out on top, if this does happen, a match between Portugal and France will be close indeed.
However, if France step up and start playing to standard, they can dominate the game, especially in the midfield.
However, if they end up not playing well and Portugal seem to be a strong side, it could be a possibility that Portugal end up coming out on top.
If Uruguay end up coming out on top of the fixture against Portugal, and they end up playing France, with how the World Cup has been playing out so far,
it’s hard to predict who will win from these 2 teams.
Uruguay played very well in the group stages, having not even conceded a goal and scoring 5 goals in 3 games, we could expect a very good game between the 2.
Uruguayan defender, Diego Godin, could act as a threat to France’s attack as he’s counted as one of the world’s best, next to players such as Ramos, Pique, Kompany and many more.
It’s safe to say, France’s midfield outclasses Uruguay’s midfield, which could pose a big threat to them.
However, if an opportunity lands for either Cavani or Suarez, you can expect them to slot it in the back of the net.
