FIFA World Cup Group Stage Predictions and Discussion

June 13, 2018 7 min to read

GROUP A:

Group A consists of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Egypt.

With the likes of players such as Diego Godin, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez, It’s safe to say that Uruguay should be expected to exit the group stage with ease if they play up to standard.

This year’s Saudi Arabia team was able to Qualify for the world cup groups for the first time since 2006, however most will be surprised if they’re able to advance to the round of 16.

Their star striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi carried them through to the world cup, scoring most of their goals to arrive to the World Cup Groups of 2018, so it would be interesting to see how Saudi performs against these teams.

Egypt has had a rough couple of weeks with Salah’s injury in mind as they arrive to the World Cup, however, it has been confirmed that he will be fit to play.

Another prospect for Egypt is 25 year old Arsenal midfielder, Mohamed Elneny.

Finally, we have the host of the World Cup, Russia. My prediction is that Russia will go head to head with Egypt for 2nd place, with Uruguay taking the first spot.

GROUP B:

Group B consists of Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Iran.

This is an interesting group as you have 2 teams which seem to be the more dominant ones of the group and you also have 2 teams which are the underdogs of the group.

However, don’t be surprised if at least 1 of the more dominant teams ends up being knocked out of the group stages.

The 2010 World Cup winners, Spain, still have an extremely strong squad, with players such as Iniesta, De Gea, David Silva and many more, I expect Spain to come out on top due to the amount of experience that’s carried throughout the whole team.

Portugal on the other hand seem to have more flair throughout the squad.

With players such as Ronaldo, Quaresma, and Joao Moutinho we can expect Portugal to put up a good fight to reach the top of the group.

Portugal have failed to surpass the round of 16 in the last 2 world cups.

Since this is probably Ronaldo’s last world cup, we could expect him to give his all to come out on top.

I expect Morocco and Iran to give a good battle for the 2nd place spot, but with not a lot of world cup experience, I can expect them to be fighting for the 3rd and 4th place spot in the group.

GROUP C:

Group C is another interesting group that looks to be very one-sided.

The group contains France, Peru, Australia and Denmark.

We can all expect France to come out on top of this group.

With players such as Dembele, Pogba, Mbappe, Lloris and many more, the mix of young talent and experience drives me to believe they will come out on top of the group stage with ease.

It’s hard to predict the rest of the group as none of the teams have a lot of World Cup experience.

If I were to guess, I would think that Denmark would take the 2nd place as they have names such as Christian Eriksen, Kasper Schmeichel and Andreas Christensen.

Peru and Australia are most probably going to be fighting for the 3rd place spot in this group stage.

I can predict Peru coming out on top of Australia.

GROUP D:

Group D consists of Argentina, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Argentina is undoubtedly the best team in the group which is why they are considered favourites to come first.

On the other hand, Iceland have been surprising with their quality of football in the past.

With the likes of players such as Finnbogason and Sigurdsson, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up clinching into that 2nd place spot and advancing to the round of 16.

Croatia can truly become a threat to Iceland and Nigeria for the 2nd place spot as they have a number of players that pose a threat in the midfield, such as Kovacic, Modric and Rakitic.

Nigeria are the most probable to be eliminated and not go on to reach the round of 16.

GROUP E:

Group E consists of Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia.

Brazil are the favourites to come out on top as they have a lot of world cup experience with a number of world class players on the team such as Neymar who might also win the golden boot.

The runners up position could go anyway with these 3 teams however, I personally believe that Switzerland would come out 2nd as they have some quality players such as, Shaqiri, Embolo and Arsenal midfielder, Xhaka.

Between Costa Rica and Serbia, I believe Serbia would come out on top of Costa Rica as they also have some very good players such as Nemanja Matic, Branislav Ivanovic, Milinkovic and Tadic.

GROUP F:

Group F consists of Germany, Mexico, Korea Republic and Sweden.

The favourites to win this group would be the 2014 world cup winners, Germany.

Sweden might not qualify for the round of 16 as it’s confirmed that one of their best strikers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not attending the world cup this year.

However they might be able to perform well against the likes of Mexico and Korea Republic.

Mexico could be one of the favourites for runners up, since they have some quality players such as, Chicharito and Giovanni Dos Santos.

As for Korea Republic, they could pose a threat against Sweden and Mexico, especially their main striker, Tottenham forward, Son Heung-Min.

GROUP G:

Group G consists of Belgium, England, Panama and Tunisia. The 2 favourites of this group would be Belgium and England.

This is because both of these teams have world class players. Some examples of Belgium’s world class players would be, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and Thibaut Courtois

Even though England’s team may get outclassed by Belgium’s that’s not to say they haven’t got a good team.

Some of their star players include Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Jamie Vardy.

As for Panama and Tunisia, I believe that Tunisia will come out on top as this is Panama’s first time qualifying for the world cup and they don’t have the experience needed to play on a level such as the world cup.

GROUP H:

Group H consists of Poland, Senegal, Japan and Colombia.

This group is interesting as it’s hard to predict a winner for this group as they all play on a near enough equal level.

However if I had to guess, I would pick Poland to win this group as they have players such as Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski and ex-Dortmund player Blaszczykowski.

I believe that the runners up for this group are going to be Colombia.

I believe this because they have a team that should be able to beat senegal and japan.

Some of Colombia’s star players are, James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and David Ospina.

As for Senegal and Japan, I personally believe Senegal will come out on top as they have a lethal attack with the likes of Mane and Keita while also having a beefy defence with Kouyate and Koulibaly.
