With 20 horses all running for that $2 million prize this is surely an event you do not want to miss out on!
The event will take place on the 5th of May 2018 and will prove to be the two most exciting minutes in sports.
With only a few weeks to go, we are curious to get our hands on the horses who are contenders for the Triple Crown.
In this article, we are going to discuss which horse is going to win the Kentucky Derby 2018 as we base our predictions on past performances as well as current positions.
This Kentucky Derby in many ways resembles last years event as there is no pre-eminent favourite but this also means that there are a handful of potential horses.
Which Horse Is Going To Win Kentucky Derby 2018?
Our prediction is: Justify
- Owner: China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Starlight Racing, WinStar Farm
- Trainer: Bob Baffert
- Earnings: $600,000
- Sire (Father): Scat Daddy
- Dam (Mother): Stage Magic, by Ghostzapper
- Breeder: John D. Gunther (Ky.)
He is the current number 1 Derby favourite and especially since he beat another favourite Bolt d’Oro in one of most anticipated prep seasons.
Currently, Justify is undefeated and trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by jockey Mike Smith.
More traditional Derby followers might comment that Justify has moved up to fat in the Santa Anita Derby and this was pure luck.
However to those critics, we would say that after his run and win against Bolt d’Oro, his talent should never be subject to question again.
Does Justify Have What It Takes To Win The Kentucky Derby?
Justify was a $500,00 purchase back in 2016 at Keeneland September yearling sale.
He also did not race as a 2-year old and this is only an issue as no horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby without at one single race on his card as a 2-year-old since Apollo accomplished this feat in 1882.
He debuted on Feb. 18, 2018, and made a terrific first impression when romping by 9 ½ lengths in a maiden special weight race at seven-eighths of a mile at Santa Anita Park.
The 103 Equibase Speed Figure was impressive for a debut runner as was the 104 Beyer Speed Figure.
With the powerful combination of legendary trainer Bob Baffert and champion jockey, Mike Smith give him a great head start.
In just the last three years, Baffert and Smith have teamed to win Grade 1 races with Justify, McKinzie, West Coast, Drefong, Abel Tasman, Mor Spirit, Arrogate, and Mastery.
Baffert has won 2,839 races through April 9, including 491 graded stakes wins, and his credentials in Triple Crown races are impeccable.
The four-time Eclipse Award winner as outstanding trainer swept the Triple Crown in 2015 with American Pharoah and has won four Kentucky Derbys, six Preakness Stakes, and two Belmont Stakes.
