The most anticipated fight of the century ended in the most logical way possible. Floyd Mayweather the unbeaten boxer with a stellar record of 49-0 going into the fight has now been bumped up to 50-0.
Those reading this article know that Mayweather had the experience behind each punch to win but still hoped for the underdog to win. But might still be rooting for Conor McGregor.
The truth is that we can’t blame you. The MMA trained UFC star put up a strong front and proved boxing experts wrong.
The fight lasted up until the 10th round when Mayweather finished McGregor off with a TKO on the 26th of August, Las Vegas T-Mobile arena in front of 14,000 people.
After defeating the Irish fighter, Mayweather stated that ‘This was my last fight tonight’. However, if you’ve followed Mayweather before you know that he’s said this in the past.
Afterall who wouldn’t like a $300 million pay cheque for a night's work?
Mayweather also raised his glass to McGregor and even praised Conor McGregor to be ‘a hell of a champion’.
What a contrast from the less than pleasant tweets over the past year between the two fighters.
Nonetheless, Mayweather has further confirmed his boxing legacy even passing the heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.
Some critics went on to state that Mayweather remains at 49-0 since technically speaking McGregor is not a boxer. Mayweather seems less than interested, this was a win for him and his pocket.
McGregor Vs Mayweather Result
From a boxing expertise reasoning, there was no sound reason for Conor McGregor to win this fight. He lacked experience in the field and had a few sets back with the stark differences between MMA and Boxing.
Although people worldwide knew that this was an unlikely match, people still urged the fighters on and eagerly waited for the fight.
In the end, it was Mayweather who was the belted champion the greatest boxing champion of his era.
The fight began with Mayweather taking a step back but as the round progressed so did his strength. This is where his hard earned experience within the ring came into play.
If one had to take a look at the numbers you would soon realise that although McGregor lost the fight, compared to other actual boxers who tried to beat Mayweather he fared quite well.
Mayweather threw 320 punches in all and landed 170. McGregor, on the other hand, threw 430 punches and landed 111.
Looking at these numbers we now know that Mayweather was more efficient in his moves but McGregor came pretty close. Manny Pacquiao in 2015 landed only 81 punches against Mayweather.
McGregor landed 30 more punches than the professional boxer Pacquiao. Anyone who dismisses McGregor needs to look at these numbers.
McGregor Vs Mayweather Fight
The fight was initially initiated by McGregor. Mayweather was happily retired with 49-0 mark.
However, after a lot of back and forths, Mayweather came around. We would think that if someone waved around 100 million we would concede too.
After the fight Mayweather said-
‘ I owned them for the Pacquiao fight. I had to come straight ahead give the fans a show. That’s what i gave them. (McGregor) He’s a lot better than I thought he's been. He’s a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight’.
The 29-year old Irish southpaw attempted many times to go after Mayweather in the ring. In the opening round, he looked uneasy whilst Mayweather danced around him to get a better point of attack.
At one point McGregor placed his hands behind his back in the second round. Conor moved forward and backwards touching Mayweather. The referee Robert Byrd called him out on hitting him from behind the head.
Mayweather eventually picked up momentum by the 4th round. This is typical of Mayweather who waits for the right moment to attack, conserving his energy for the later rounds.
He began to land his right hand against McGregor who seemed to be feeling the punches more and more.
With his mouth open and signs of fatigue, Mayweather began to attack his body.
‘Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch,’ Mayweather said.
‘We know in MMA he fights for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, he started to slow down. I guaranteed to everybody that this wouldn’t go the distance’.
By the 6th round, Mayweather increased his head shots and McGregor showed signs of fatigue. His punches got stronger and McGregor, on the other hand, failed to land punches that had an affect on Mayweather.
As the 9th round rolled around, Mayweather had the fight in the bag. Using clean right hands to get under McGregor’s skin. Although McGregor showed an yearning to fight back he was out of his league.
On the 10th round, McGregor had no more shots to fire. Mayweather landed a right hand that almost knocked him out. He followed up with a dozen unanswered punches. Byrd stepped in and ended the fight at 1 minute and 5 seconds.
McGregor Vs Paulie Malignaggi
Although the biggest boxing fight of his boxing career is behind him, Conor McGregor still has 4 more fights left on his UFC contract.
This means that even though Mayweather is officially retired, we still have years of McGregor left to watch.
McGregor dominates the UFC. He is the only fighter who represents over 1 million pay-per-view buys. No other fighter can be certain of this much attention on a single fight.
Alvarez is a close bet but still lags behind McGregor. McGregor’s last 5 fights have yielded in 1.2 million buys.
Paulie Malignaggi is a former two-weight champion but not a pay-per-view fighter. He is a 37-year old fighter.
Much like the bouts with Mayweather, the talks of a possible fight with Paulie Malignaggi is only after the leaked camp videos of McGregor knocking down Malignaggi. Pauli took offense to and left the camp whilst calling McGregor less than flattering names.
We can expect a possible future fight between the two.
